Business Insurance

General liability for small businesses

General liability is the foundation of most business insurance programs. It protects against common claims like a customer slipping in your shop or damage you cause at a client's property.

Many small-business policies can be quoted online through NEXT Insurance. For larger, specialized or hard-to-place risks, send a request and we will shop it for you. Selecting "Get an Instant Business Quote" takes you to a third-party website that has its own privacy policy and terms. A quote is not a binder or a guarantee of coverage.

Many leases, permits and contracts require it, often with specific limits and additional insured wording. We can help you meet those requirements and issue certificates.

What general liability can cover

Bodily injury

Third-party injuries that happen at your location or because of your operations.

Property damage

Damage you cause to someone else's property.

Personal & advertising injury

Claims such as libel, slander or copyright infringement in your advertising.

Products & completed operations

Injury or damage caused by your products or work after it is finished.

Things to consider

  • General liability does not cover injuries to your own employees. That is workers' compensation.
  • It also does not cover professional mistakes. Consider professional liability if you give advice or services.
  • Check contracts for additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary/non-contributory requirements.

This is a general description, not a policy. Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by insurer and are governed by the policy actually issued.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?

When your policy is written online through NEXT Insurance, certificates are generally available right after purchase. For other policies, we issue certificates once coverage is bound.

What limits do I need?

$1 million per occurrence / $2 million aggregate is common, but your contracts or landlord may require more.
