Surety Bonds

CSLB contractor license bonds, handled online

The Contractors State License Board requires a $25,000 contractor license bond for most licenses. Some licenses also need a Bond of Qualifying Individual, and LLCs have an additional employee/worker bond requirement.

Surety bond applications are processed through the BondExchange platform. Approval and premium depend on the surety's underwriting. Selecting "Get a Bond Online" takes you to a third-party website that has its own privacy policy and terms. A quote is not a binder or a guarantee of coverage.

What contractor license bonds can cover

Contractor license bond

The $25,000 bond required to issue, reinstate or renew most CSLB licenses.

Bond of qualifying individual

Required in certain cases when the qualifier is not the owner.

LLC employee/worker bond

An additional bond required for contractor licenses held by an LLC.

Things to consider

  • A surety bond protects the public, not the contractor. If the surety pays a claim, you are responsible for repaying it.
  • Premium depends largely on credit and experience.
  • The bond must stay active for your license to stay active.

This is a general description, not a policy. Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by insurer and are governed by the policy actually issued.
